wk1 pr2-1
My name is Crystal Martin-Johnson, I am an Infection Preventionist (Infection Prevention Nurse) at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Mississippi. In my free time, I love to journal, craft and travel. I am obsessed with coffee and tea, and love reading a good book preferably Sci-Fi or Fantasy. Nursing is a second career for me. I started off as a health educator and then pursued my MBA-HA and worked as a healt h administrator for a few years. I went to LPN school in 2018 and worked in several areas from research, primary care, long term care, and long term acute care. I became an RN and worked in the Covid ICU then moved to the Neonatal ICU. Now I work as an Infection Preventionist. I am a student in the BSN-DNP-FNP track at Maryville University. When I lived in Arkansas, I belong to a ton of groups that promotes health policies. Now, I am only a member of APIC (The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology). Through this organization, we are able to make infection policies and procedures through our organization. I actually enjoy learning about healthcare policies. After locating the Mississippi Action Coalition, I learned that there are over 40 stakeholders participating within the coalition. There’s not alot going on with it here in Mississippi, but last year in May there was a webinar that was held. There were not a lot of state and federal legislators representing Mississippi but I did find a few to include: Jenifer Branning, Kenji Holloway, Bennie Thompson, Cindy Hyde- Smith, Roger Wicker, Brent Powell, Josh Harkins, and Michael Guest. Overall, I was disappointed in Mississippi’s representatives. There are many briefs but I only found about four healthcare policy/ legislation within their briefs. So I followed Representative Bennie Thompson and looked through his brief. I discovered one healthcare policy that I was interested in learning more about. That policy was U.S. Congress H.R. 220. This policy addresses coverage for infertility treatment and standard fertility preservation services to the Secretary of Veteran Affairs. A healthcare policy topic that I am interested in addressing especially in this state is preventative health screenings and early detection of chronic diseases. This is something that I am very interested in because there has been an influx of chronic diseases that have resulted in fatalities within the state. One of the things that I have noticed is that there has been barriers to preventative medicine to include social inequalities (Agénor, et. al., 2024). Social inequalities can consists of racial inequalities, social determinants of health, and more. Therefore, I want to explore further because as a Family Nurse Practitioner, my role will be to prevent and educate on preventative medicine and work through chronic disorders.
