After watching â€œUnfished Business,â€ many thoughts widened and disrupted my moral and ethical compass. While working in healthcare, I have experienced many dilemmas, unforeseen outcomes, and disheartening treatment toward humankind. The central salient part of this film expanded on financial concerns for healthcare for patrons of the United States. Healthcare costs have skyrocketed over the last four years and are expected to remain high while people depend on insurance companies (Unfinished Business, 2016). Obtaining the most straightforward care in the USA can bankrupt a family in seconds, let alone an unexpected event/illness. This film’s ethical and moral highlights project the ultimate need for insurance that does not confuse, financially burden, or sacrifice quality care.

While nurses have been engraved to project patient advocacy, many nurses, including myself, have difficulty implementing policy changes, even at the most minor levels. My role as an emergency department nurse includes many skills, training, and advocacy for those coming in at one of the most vulnerable times in one’s life. We must provide safe, effective, efficient, and unbiased care to all those we took an oath to. As a bedside nurse, I introduce and expand policy changes to provide ever-changing healthcare. Nursing can influence policy changes due to analytical, communication, and organizational skills (Patton et al., 2022). Our role is rooted in ethical principles that include autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, and justice. Leading change requires reducing disparities while achieving health equity by addressing multiple levels of nursing, such as clinical practices, organizations, communities, populations, health authorities, and nations (Flaubert et al., 2021).

The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report focuses on improving the health and well-being of the nation; as nurses, we must achieve this by advancing health equity, reducing social determinants, and improving health outcomes. This report allows for a change to include comprehensive healthcare for everyone. We must fully address underlying issues, collaborate with other professionals, and integrate various skill sets to advance healthcare nationwide (Flaubert et al., 2021).
