I think my responsibilities as a RN will extend and grow as I further my career. Currently, we heavily emphasize education and advocacy for the patient. While those two principles and responsibilities are paramount, as an NP we are going to increase the weight and (hopefully) the effectiveness of how and why we utilize them in our practice. We are going to be able to prescribe and help a patient to understand the necessity behind adherence will help their overall well-being. Meanwhile, if we can further their health literacy and enable them to see the greater picture, which would include their overall lifestyle and the impact that can have on their health and medication, we can be successful.
To me, especially regarding my future prospective patient population of the pediatric mental health community, the most important thing I can do for my patients is show up. Showing up and listening. Showing up and being present. Showing up and intervening, if need be. These are the things these children need, and I want to be there – present – on the front lines. A quick reference would be an article about how COVID-19 affected the in-person relations between providers and their patients, and we are left in a post-digital world where the challenge of a virtual presence is now at the forefront of some plans of care (Arribasâ€Ayllon, 2023). As someone who has thought about the pros and cons of teletherapy, I do think that there is a lot more thought that needs to go into the relationship that can be built through a virtual presence, rather than a physical one, while also remembering that some clients prefer the distance and use it as a defensive crutch.
In my readings, I thought the environmental tobacco smoke section was the most fascinating, intriguing, and relevant to future practice. Mainly because it was such a wonderful use of the primary health promotion of prevention and worked on a federal level, trickling down to the local level. As a former smoker, I thought it was a shocking slap to see my blissful ignorance impacting the health of those around me – including children. Now, to push it even further, two of my children have cystic fibrosis and it is THE MOST impactful thing to have compromised air outside, let alone in a building where people ate?! Oh my gosh, I am so happy I have grown beyond that disgusting habit and can stand wholeheartedly behind the prevention effort for others.
