Hello Everyone! My name is Kaitlyn (she/her), and I reside in New Hampshire with my husband, two children, and many animals (ranging from horses, chickens, emus, goats, dogs, and more). I am an RN at a local small community hospital and previously was an RN for a VNA agency for about six years. I recently transitioned into the hospital setting after deciding to go back to school for my FNP certification. I currently have my MSN, with a focus on clinical nurse leadership.

As a Nurse Practitioner, I believe in the importance of patient-centered care, which involves understanding our patients’ history, including their cultural beliefs, family history, and medical history, and educating them on health promotion and lifestyle changes that suit their needs. As an RN Case Manager, I was exposed to various patient beliefs reflecting their health, well-being, and lifestyle choices. As a Nurse Practitioner, I am deeply committed to using my professional background knowledge to ensure high-quality patient-centered care. The most important thing you can do for your patients is to listen to what they say, communicate effectively, and ensure that each patient receives the highest quality of care I can provide. While I have been working in the medical field for over a decade, I have encountered many patients who will share their opinions on the medical care they receive with their direct care team, an RN being one of those individuals. One of the most common shared experiences that patients disclose personally is communication. When patients receive high-quality care, in my experience, they will share that their practitioner takes the time to talk to them and not at them, thus making them feel like they are being listened to and not ignored. As a medical professional, I have set this goal for myself: to always make sure that my patients feel that their wants and needs matter and that they are not being ignored.

In this week’s readings, many interesting facts and key points were discussed in various articles. However, one article that caught my attention, in particular, was written by Lois Wessel, 2017. Stepping back for a moment, as mentioned, I live in New Hampshire; however, where I live is considered rural, and the outdoors is your neighbor. Many residents in this area enjoy hiking, swimming, walking, skiing, etc. The outdoors is often portrayed as your medicine. I feel that it would be such a great opportunity in my professional career to have a practice that allows patients to meet with their practitioners outside, on a beautiful summer day or at the peak of fall foliage, where you can establish a positive headspace while breathing in the fresh air and crisp fall leaves. In addition to scheduled appointments outside, as the article discussed, there should be a park prescription option in this area (Wessel, 2017). A park prescription is a healthcare provider’s written instruction to a patient to engage in outdoor activities for the purpose of improving overall health and well-being (Wessel, 2017). Providers can tailor a patient’s care and lifestyle changes to meet their needs and desires (Wessel, 2017). This is an excellent opportunity for Nurse Practitioners to individualize a patient’s health and wellness with the opportunity to utilize the great outdoors.
