PEER 1 JM
Hello Class,
Since the beginning of this advanced pharmacology course at Maryville University, I have experienced significant growth in both my clinical reasoning and confidence in pharmacologic decision-making. Early in the course, I found the critical thinking exercises—particularly those involving medication selection and dosing—challenging. I often struggled with integrating patient-specific factors such as comorbidities, renal function, and potential drug interactions into a cohesive prescribing plan. Additionally, applying national guidelines to real-world scenarios initially felt overwhelming due to the volume and complexity of information.
Over time, I have developed a more structured and systematic approach to pharmacologic decision-making. I now feel more confident in evaluating first-line versus second-line therapies, understanding mechanisms of action, and justifying treatment choices using evidence-based guidelines. For example, assignments involving antibiotic selection and chronic disease management have strengthened my ability to tailor therapy to individual patients while considering safety, efficacy, and cost. What once felt like memorization has evolved into true clinical application and critical thinking (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
The most useful learning tools for me have been guideline-based resources, case-based learning, and repetition through practice exercises. Utilizing nationally recognized guidelines has been essential in reinforcing appropriate prescribing practices and improving patient outcomes. Additionally, working through patient scenarios—such as the Shadow Health assignments—helped bridge the gap between theory and practice by simulating real clinical decision-making. Evidence suggests that case-based and active learning strategies significantly enhance clinical reasoning and knowledge retention in advanced practice nursing education (Bastable et al., 2021).
Overall, this course has significantly enhanced my ability to think critically about medication management and has prepared me for safe and effective prescribing in advanced practice. I feel more confident in my ability to analyze clinical situations, apply evidence-based recommendations, and provide patient-centered care.

PEER 2 KK
I can hardly believe that we have already reached week 16 of Advanced Pharmacology. At the beginning of this class, I felt quite nervous. However, over the past 16 weeks, I have noticed significant growth in my knowledge and understanding of various pharmacological classes.
Initially, I struggled to differentiate between antibiotic classes and their uses, but I now feel that I have mastered many of their intended applications. The UpToDate database has been immensely helpful in providing dosing recommendations, treatment pathways, patient education, medication interactions, adverse effects, and much more. In my future independent practice, I will definitely consult UpToDate and other databases to ensure that I am delivering the most evidence-based care possible. The interactive concept labs with Shadow Health were also extremely helpful for assessing patients and prescribing the correct medications. It was nice to have a virtual scenario to practice with before stepping out into the real world.
The case study scenarios also sparked my creative and critical thinking. Often, we were given information and had to develop a treatment plan on our own. This process really piqued my interest as I gathered information about proper treatment options.
Overall, I feel successful in completing this course, and it has truly deepened my understanding of medications, their mechanisms of action, uses, and adverse effects. Good luck to everyone with the rest of your studies!
