Older adults have multiple diseases and impairments (ex., cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders, cognitive impairments, etc.) and subsequently use various drugs.  Polypharmacy can lead to drug-drug interactions, thus causing age-related worsening of renal and hepatic function, adverse outcomes such as falls, and cognitive and functional decline (Hilmer et al., 2024). In addition, these adverse effects are sometimes misattributed to primary disease and can lead to a prescribing cascade (Hilmer et al., 2024).

When the term geriatric is mentioned, the words that often come to mind are frail and dependent. Yet, many older adults are self-sufficient, while others need increased care and supervision. Older adults may encounter many factors that affect their health or quality of life, such as a loss of independence, feelings of being disregarded or overlooked, age discrimination, reduced mobility, loneliness, and depression. They face numerous challenging changes that necessitate life adjustments and individualized supportive care.

Older adults may experience a loss of independence during the aging process due to physical, physiological, psychological, and social changes that result in disabilities in activities of daily living. Independence among older adults refers to the level of individual autonomy in fulfilling their daily needs and exercising their right to choose (Motamed-Jahromi & Kaveh, 2021). One article highlights the significance of preserving older adults’ capacity and independence in ADLs through cognitive and physical interventions. Decreased independence may lead to reliance on others in ADLs, lower quality of life, and compromised health (Motamed-Jahromi & Kaveh, 2021). The website also discussed the need for healthcare providers to periodically assess older patients for loneliness and social isolation and connect those at risk with community resources for assistance.
