What safeguards do you presently have in your professional practice to ensure protection of patient information?
At the hospital, I work with the practice that helps ensure patient information protection using Epic EMR. Epic is a HIPAA-compliant software that uses encrypted data to help protect the patient’s information. Epic and the hospital only allow information available to staff as needed; for example, you can not see who is on other floors. Our hospital also has policies on nurses looking only at their patients to help protect the patient’s information.
What safeguards are currently utilized at your healthcare organization to ensure privacy?
One of the safeguards is transport layer security (TLS) and secure sockets layer (SSL), in addition to encryption, to help ensure privacy. TLS, short for Transport Layer Security, and SSL, short for Secure Socket Layers, are cryptographic protocols that encrypt data and authenticate a connection when moving data between EPIC and healthcare facilities and the Internet. (Kinsta, 2021) The Epic system also locks the system if inactive for when a person accidentally walks away, and they didn’t log out. Badge login and out are rapid and help protect patients’ information because it’s easy to log out if they have to leave quickly.
What types of ethical concerns could an organization incur if a data breach were to occur?
Ethical and legal concerns can arise if this personal data is breached. Medical information is very private and personal. Very private information, such as demographic information like transgender status and immigration, could be breached, which could affect a person’s health and legal status. These breaches of data could turn the patient’s life upside down. Companies could also use their information for possible sales. Either way, patients’ information should be protected. It will be worse than ethical concerns, legal outcomes, and potential life changes like deportation or suicide due to mental health being so adverse due to private information being leaked. This is why patient’s health and personal information should be able to be breached by others or companies. Ethical issues from a breach could lead to discrimination, harassment, and concerns about safety.
