Reflecting on my experience in NR582, several key concepts shaped my understanding of the nurse practitioner role and my transition from bedside nurse to advanced practice provider. One of the most impactful concepts was responsible leadership. It emphasizes ethical decision-making, accountability, and social responsibility. This course challenged me to think beyond direct patient care and recognize how leadership and healthcare policy influence patient outcomes, access to care, and organizational culture (Porche, 2023).

Another concept that stood out was health equity and the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH). Throughout the course, I gained a deeper understanding of how structural barriers affect vulnerable populations. In my clinical experience, I have cared for veteran patients who were discharged on Friday evenings but could not obtain prescribed medications due to limited pharmacy access after business hours. As a future Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I will advocate for improved discharge planning and policies that ensure continuity of care for high-risk populations.

This course has supported my achievement of Program Outcome 5: Advocates for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. Through discussions, case studies, and leadership assignments, I learned to evaluate healthcare issues using evidence-based practice and develop patient-centered solutions. These activities strengthened my ability to advocate for patients while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to improve outcomes (Specchia et al., 2021).

One AACN Essentials subcompetency that aligns closely with my learning is 10.3p: Advocate for the promotion of social justice and abolition of structural racism and systematic inequity in nursing and society. This course increased my awareness of healthcare disparities and reinforced the importance of advocating for equitable access to care. As a future NP, I plan to support policy and organizational changes that improve medication access and promote health equity among underserved populations.

Reflect on your learning experience. Which concepts stood out to you and made an impact?  How do you envision using the concepts learned in this course in your future nursing practice as a master’s prepared nurse? 

One of the most valuable lessons I gained from the Leadership and Role Development for Advanced Nursing Practice course was a deeper appreciation of the leadership role advanced practice nurses play in improving patient outcomes and healthcare systems. The concepts of transformational leadership, servant leadership, and effective communication impressed me most. I realized the significance of collaboration, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence in creating positive patient and team outcomes. All these concepts made me see that leadership goes beyond managing people and includes advocating for patients and improving healthcare systems. As a future PMHNP, I plan to use these skills to lead interdisciplinary teams, support evidence-based practice, and improve access to mental health services. The course enhanced my confidence in serving as both a clinician and a leader.

The course assignments and learning activities provided me with the skills needed to advocate for positive health outcomes through compassionate and evidence-based practice. Leadership discussions and case studies highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration in the delivery of high-quality patient care. Reflective assignments guided my consideration of how leadership behaviors impact patient safety, staff relationships, and healthcare outcomes. Additionally, this course reinforced the value of using current evidence to guide decision-making and improve clinical practice. All these experiences will enable me to provide compassionate care while working with other healthcare professionals to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. In my role as a master’s prepared nurse, I will use these skills to advocate for patients and initiate quality improvement.

This course helped me develop competency 10.3k by presenting the ways in which leadership principles can be applied to affect change in healthcare. From the leadership assessments, discussions, and change-management activities, I saw how effective leaders’ direct teams through challenges and improvements. It showed how transformational leadership can promote collaboration, innovation, and professional development. This was also an eye-opener on how evidence-based decisions can lead to successful organizational change. As a future PMHNP, I will apply these leadership strategies in improving access to mental health care and promoting a patient-centered practice. These experiences have prepared me to be an agent of positive change in healthcare organizations and the communities which they serve.
