original assignement: Select a problem of importance to your practice (this might be related to your DNP scholarly project). How can epidemiology be used to improve this situation? Is there a type of observational study that has addressed this problem in the nursing literature? If so, please cite example. If not, what would you design to address your problem?

Epidemiology is a very important part of figuring out how to help depressed teens and young adults with depression early on and how that affects suicide attempts. By studying how these health effects are spread out and what causes them, epidemiologists can give us useful information that helps us come up with good ways to help. Surveillance and data collection help figure out how common and how often depression and suicide attempts are within this group of people. These efforts show trends and patterns that help guide prevention and treatment programs. Epidemiological studies can also find risk and protective factors that are linked to depression and suicide attempts. This helps healthcare professionals come up with personalized treatments that meet the needs of people who are at risk (Celentano et al, 2019).

In this case, observational studies like cohort and case-control studies are very helpful. A cohort study could track a group of depressed teens and young adults over time and compare those who get early help, like cognitive-behavioral therapy, medicine, or mental health programs at school, to those who don’t. With this approach, researchers can see how early interventions affect depression and the number of suicide attempts over time. An example of a relevant cohort study that was used in nursing literature is ” The Incidence and Course of Depression in Bereaved Youth 21 Months After the Loss of a Parent to Suicide Accident or Sudden Natural Death. ” by “The American Journal of Psychiatry”. This study tracks youth over time to see how often they become depressed and what happens after early intervention. It gives us important information about how early care can lower the risk of suicide (Brent et al, 2009).

If there aren’t any additional relevant studies already, creating a prospective group study would be a good way to solve the problem. Teenagers and young adults with depression between the ages of 12 and 25 could be recruited for the study and split into two groups: a training group and a control group. Early treatments like cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication, or school-based programs would be given to the intervention group. The control group, on the other hand, would get normal care. Over the course, regular checks would be made to see how bad the depression was, how well the treatments were working, and how many suicide attempts happened. The number of suicide attempts and changes in the seriousness of depression would be used to measure the outcomes, and the intervention and control groups would be compared using data analysis (Doupnik et al, 2020).

Utilizing epidemiological methods and creating strong observational studies, healthcare professionals can learn more about how well early treatments for depressed teens and young adults work. This data can help doctors make decisions about how to treat patients and how to make policies, which will ultimately improve mental health and lower the number of suicide attempts in this vulnerable group (Celentano et al, 2019).
