PEER ONE: 

My name is Barb Richards, and I use the pronouns she/her/hers. I live in Montana and have two adult children and two grandchildren. I have been working as a school nurse for 14 years. Before this, I worked in various pediatric areas, home health, and hospice. I also provide wound care at an LTC facility, teach and test out CNA students, and pick up a few shifts. I also do some hospice work on an as-needed basis.  

Advanced pathophysiology involves studying disease processes and their influence on the body’s physiological behavior. Knowledge through pathophysiology is a foundation used to understand disease processes and provides a path for treatment, prevention, and managing symptoms caused by disease processes (Peate,2022).  When diagnosing and treating an illness or disease, understanding pathophysiology provides the knowledge required to approach the root cause of a disease and clinical manifestations. An advanced practice nurse can utilize this knowledge while facilitating treatment and manifesting prognosis.

Advanced practice nursing has been abundantly reported to positively impact health care access and patient outcomes. This presence in the medical field fosters an important rally to educate and promote their contributions to the medical universe (Woo, Tam, Hartman, & Zou, 2024). An advanced practice nurse will benefit from a solid understanding of pathophysiology and use this knowledge to analyze the evidence gathered through symptoms, medical history, physical examination, labs, and diagnostic testing. This knowledge provides the premise for clinical decisions and diagnosis related to the clinical manifestations of disease. (Peate,2022). The knowledge from pathophysiology supports the nurse in providing comprehensive care and treatment to their patients and families.

I have been in the medical field for the past 17 years, and I love it as I feel there is always more to learn. I am married with 3 children, all of whom are now teenagers, making me now question my life decisions. I enjoy outdoor activities like mountain biking and hiking, and indoor activities like movies and board games.

Pathophysiology is the study of diseases that occur due to dysfunction of normal cellular processes (Rogers, 2022). These dysfunctions can occur through many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, leading to the disease process. This course is more advanced as we study more in-depth regarding the causes of disease processes, which in turn allows a better understanding of prevention and treatment.

Understanding of pathophysiology for the nurse practitioner is essential to the process of assessing, diagnosing, and treating a condition. Due to the underlying pathophysiology, particular signs and symptoms will be found on the exam. As a result of the pathophysiology of a condition, you will be able to obtain the diagnostics needed to confirm your diagnosis. In order to provide the correct treatment for a condition, whether pharmaceutical or not, you must understand what is causing the condition in order to treat it. Therefore, an understanding of pathophysiology must occur at every step of the medical process to care for a patient.
