Hope everyone was able to have a nice break! My name is Sarah and I currently reside in Wisconsin. I’ve been married for almost 10 years and together with my husband we have three kids, a 4 1/2-year old son, almost 3 year old daughter (turns 3 in a week) and then our youngest daughter is almost 18 months old. We’re very busy but in a good way! I currently work as a nurse in Obstetrics and Gynecology with a past work history in the Emergency Department followed by a short stint in Urgent Care. I am currently enrolled in the MSN-FNP track and look forward to being one step closer to graduation!
How do you see yourself applying knowledge from this course?
Knowledge from the course will be instrumental in not only understanding the moving dynamics of healthcare delivery systems, but how insurance policies, legislature liability and ethics impact these systems along with our day to day activities and patient outcomes. Understanding this unique relationship is imperative to supporting positive patient outcomes while also considering economic crossroads.
With regard to your professional experience, describe how you have felt either positive or negative impacts of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
Although the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was implemented prior to my role as a Registered Nurse (RN), I have encountered numerous patient interactions in which the patient expressed concerns about care being received and lack or limited insurance coverage. This was especially prevalent while I worked as a nurse in the Emergency Department. With the ACA, care access has been greatly improved, allowing patients to seek care tailored to their unique needs coupled with a decreased fear of associated financial burdens. This is especially predominate for those struggling with mental health or substance abuse concerns. Because of the ACA, which is still being supported in Wisconsin, enrollees have improved access to mental and substance abuse programs to help guide and improve their quality of life. Furthermore, the ACA has contributed millions of dollars to grant programs tailored towards reducing the stigma and negative effects of untreated and poorly-managed mental health and substance abuse disorders (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). These successful program has trained more than 143,000 individuals who work in the mental health field or a related profession and more than 300,000 people in communities across the country on suicide prevention and mental health promotion (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022).
Additionally, the ACA has also proven to reduce the number of times a “frequent-user†visits the Emergency Department. According to McConville et al. (2018), post-ACA initiation resulted in a decreased likelihood of frequent ED user numbers most likely attributed to expanded Medicaid coverage allowing patients to access medical services outside of the Emergency Department. The not only opens access in surrounding Emergency Departments, but ensure individuals are receiving quality treatment specific to their care needs.
