Greetings Dr. Medina & Class,

In this advanced pathophysiology course, several concepts stood out because they changed how I connect symptoms to mechanisms – moving me from “what is happening” to “why it is happening”. The most impactful learning for me was gaining a stronger systems lens – seeing how multiple organ systems interact and how that interaction can shape presentation, risk, and treatment response, especially in psychiatric practice.

As a future psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I will apply advanced pathophysiology to deliver care that is accurate, safe, and patient-centered. Specifically, I will:

• Integrate physiologic reasoning into psychiatric assessment by using pathophysiology to interpret presenting symptoms, evaluate red flags, and determine when further medical evaluation is needed.
• Improve clinical safety through mechanism-informed medication decisions by anticipating adverse effects and drug-organ interactions, monitoring relevant biomarkers, and adjusting plans based on physiologic risk.
• Strengthen diagnostic confidence through structured differential thinking, especially when patients present with atypical mood/cognitive/behavioral symptoms, acute changes, or significant comorbid medical history.
• Provide holistic care that includes the body-mind connection by linking stress physiology, inflammation, sleep, pain, metabolic health, and medication affects to the patient’s mental health trajectory.
• Collaborate more effectively with an interprofessional team because my reasoning will more clearly justify when referrals, labs, imaging, or medical consultations are needed.

Course learning activities and assignments contribute directly to Program Outcome One by building three capabilities: 1) clinical safety through structured reasoning, 2) patient-centered decision making through mechanistic understanding, and 3) holistic care by connecting symptom experience to physiologic processes.

Course assignments and learning activities support AACN Essentials Competency 1.3 by strengthening both the reasoning foundation and the evidence translation habit.

• 3d: integrated foundational and advanced knowledge into clinical reasoning: Course work helps me integrate foundational physiology and advanced disease mechanisms into a coherent clinical model. Through pathway-focused learning and scenario-based reasoning, I practice combining normal science, disease processes, and clinical findings into a justification for assessment priorities and diagnostic considerations.
• 3e: synthesize current and emerging evidence to influence practice: assignments that require evidence-based rationale strengthen how I use scientific knowledge to guide clinical decisions. I learned to connect emerging research and updated clinical understanding to practice steps such as assessment strategies, monitoring parameters, and treatment planning that accounts for both symptom targets and underlying physiologic risk.

This course strengthened my ability to connect symptoms to underlying mechanisms, which will directly improve my safety and diagnostic confidence in PMHNP practice.
