Assessments
Before writing your initial post, complete the Crucial Accountability Appendix A and the StrengthsFinder assessments. For StrengthsFinder, follow these steps:
- Go to StrengthsFinder registrationLinks to an external site. and create an account with your book’s unique access code. You must have a new copy of StrengthsFinder 2.0 for the code for this assessment.
- Complete the assessment according to the directions.
- Review your report about your strengths and their application in the workplace as well as a list of just your five strengths. Note that these strengths are not reported in any order—for example, the first one isn’t your strongest. All five of these are the strengths you lead with in your life.
- Read about your strengths in StrengthsFinder 2.0.
Initial Post
Discuss the following, in about one paragraph each:
- Describe any leadership experiences you’ve had (I have had Charge nurse positions in Pediatric Trauma ICU and Adult Medical ICU and Quality Improvement Coordinator in a Level 1 Trauma center’s OR) (this can include positions other than those with a formal management or leadership title). Include your two required references in this section.
- How has “leadership” affected you in your career thus far?
- Have you ever had a bad experience with a manager?
- How has nursing leadership evolved historically?
- How is leadership different for the DNP-prepared nurse?
- What leadership opportunities do you plan to seek after completing your DNP?
- Your leadership style: Describe your top strengths from the StrengthsFinder assessment. SEE ATTACHED DOCUMENT
- Do you agree or disagree with the results? Why?
- How can you use your strengths in your practice and as a doctorally prepared nurse?
- What components of your strengths might be a barrier to your leadership?
- Your results from Appendix A in Crucial Accountability.
- What confrontations do you typically avoid? What tricks do you use to talk yourself out of speaking up?
- What skill do you find most difficult to put into practice? Why? What will it take to get better at that skill?
- What can you do to break the silence-to-violence habit?
WHERE DO YOU STAND? Here’s what your total score means:
I scored a 12 on the assessment
26–35:Don’t put this book down!
16–25:You could use some help, but at least you’re honest.
6–15:You’re capable and likely are succeeding.
1–5:You could teach us all a thing or two.
Chapter-by-Chapter ResultsThis survey is divided into the seven chapters that cover crucial accountability skills (five questions each). Look at your results chapter by chapter. You may want to focus your attention on the chapters where you checked the most “yes†boxes. These chapters offer the solutions to your most common challenges
- Compare the results from Crucial Accountability with your strengths from StrengthsFinder. Reflect on your self-assessments and consider complexity within health care and healthcare organizations.
- Systemic thinking: Describe how you plan to use systemic thinking (see this week’s reading from Transformational Leadership in Nursing) in your practice.
