The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010 has greatly improved our nation’s health care system. Registered Nurses are the backbone of every health care organization and by improving the systems in which impede the services we provide, we increase the quality of care and the number of patients we reach on a day to day basis. One provision that will impact my future nursing practice is the addition of School-based Health Clinics. Section 4101 would grant the addition of these facilities and equipment that would help cater to the shortage of primary care physicians attending to children (ANA, 2010). One of my future goals is to become a public health nurse and this would afford myself and many nurses across the nation the opportunity to serve our communities and increase the health of our future by targeting these uninsured populationsAnother provision that have impacted my current practice of nursing is under the Primary Care Workforce, Section 530. This provision established a grant program for students to enhance their professional development and to establish and maintain academic departments in primary care (ANA, 2010). My hospital was able to provide me with financial assistance that would help increase the number of Bachelor’s degree prepared nurses in my unit where the majority of the staff are Associate degree prepared nurses. This financial aid has increased our unit’s retention and has allowed more nurses the opportunity to advance in their careers all while not impacting their family’s income or employment.
