Shakespeare’s comedies are often full of plot twists and cases of mistaken identity, but nevertheless manage to convey the sense that love will eventually conquer all. The Merchant of Venice is such a play, and despite its reputation as a “problem play†(i.e., one which doesn’t comfortably fit under its genre designation), determining how the various actions adhere to the different stages of plot structure can reveal much about the underlying themes of the play.
