The DNP scholarly project on evaluating and managing overweight and obese adults in primary care is crucial to my family nursing practice as a nurse practitioner because it addresses a significant health issue with profound implications for individual health outcomes and healthcare system sustainability. Obesity rates have risen dramatically worldwide, with prevalence varying across different populations and demographic groups. For instance, in the United States, approximately 42.4% of adults were obese as of 2017-2018, highlighting the widespread nature of this problem (Boutari & Mantzoros, 2022).
Understanding the prevalence and incidence rates of obesity is essential as they underscore the scope and urgency of intervention needed. Research indicates that certain populations, such as racial and ethnic minorities and those with lower socioeconomic status, experience higher rates of obesity compared to others; these disparities can be influenced by various factors including access to healthcare, cultural norms, and environmental influences (Kumanyika, 2019).
A relevant study by Washington et al., (2018) explored disparities in obesity prevalence among adults in the United States from 2011 to 2014, revealing that non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic adults had significantly higher obesity rates compared to non-Hispanic White adults. This finding underscores the importance of culturally competent and targeted interventions in primary care settings to effectively address obesity and its associated health risks across diverse patient populations.
In my role as a family nurse practitioner, this project enables me to develop evidence-based strategies tailored to the needs of overweight and obese adults in primary care. By focusing on prevention, early detection, and comprehensive management, I aim to improve patient outcomes, enhance quality of life, and reduce healthcare costs associated with obesity-related comorbidities. Through continuous evaluation and adaptation of interventions, I strive to contribute to the advancement of nursing practice and the delivery of patient-centered care in combating obesity.
