The biblical narrative that God reveals in his work the Bible the story of creation, fall, redemption and glorification. We begin at creation; we had a great fall and then we are moved upward to redemption and glorification all this is accomplished through Jesus.
Creation was the first act in the Biblical narrative of God creating in 7 days the earth out of a formless void, darkness into lightness, sun, moon and stars. He created the sky filled them with birds, the seas filled them with fish, the land livestock ad wild animals and slithering creatures. He created humanity in his own image. Genesis 1:26-28, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness so that may rule over the fish of the sea and the bird sin the sky over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground, 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.†In Genesis 1:18-25 God affirms the goodness of all he has made and rests on the Sabbath. During creation there was no death or sickness, always wellness and life. It wasn’t until the fall that illness reared it sinful head.
The second act in the Biblical Narrative is the fall of humanity from the temptation of Satan enticing Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, the fruit of truth and knowledge. Through the eating of the forbidden fruit we become spiritually and physically bound to sin and separated from the presence of God, our Creator and Father. The known Shalom was replaced with guilt from having knowledge, therefore, sickness is in the world because of sin and Satan. It is said in Romans 5:12, “Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.
The third act in the Biblical Narrative (the new testament) we are redeemed through the birth and death of Jesus Christ or Lord and Savior. It is only through his blood that we are saved and redeemed. It is here were we can find hope and comfort in the light of illness. In James 5:14-15 it is written, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.” and in Matthew 11:28-30 tells us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The forth act of the Biblical Narrative is Restoration, the final defeat of sin when Jesus shows his presence for a second time and there will be no sickness or death. In Revelations 21:4 it is written that, “ He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed awayâ€.
